A Planetarium at the Museum

Posted on

When visiting overseas cities I have found it interesting to see what they can offer in terms of a Planetarium, with scientific information about the night sky and the universe ‘out there’ to which we all belong. It seems to me that the Southland Museum and Art Gallery could provide such an interesting and informative facility, using the resources of astronomers and teachers based in the city and at Awarua. There could be interactive displays, films, and lectures on astrophysics and space research from visiting and local scientists, including a new observatory to replace the one scheduled for demolition.

Given the fact the museum closed the observatory, it makes sense they replace it. Add to that that Invercargill is the gateway to the Aurora Australis, this would be fantastic!

A great idea. The Cosmos is the new frontier and the sooner the young acquaint themselves with what’s happening out there it will make them more aware of the wider view of “life”. And probably where life began!

So make it readily available – bring on the virtual reality – the future is here! Our grandchildren’s children will find it hard to believe that we once drove cars using petrol – vehicles will be electric. Electrodes will be under the road and as the car moves over them the battery will get charged. No need for charging stations.

Love this idea. The observatory has grown so popular just in the last 2 years we have been here. It is such a shame to lose it. It would be fantastic to have something that is more accessible all the time.
